Lights burn in the financial district as Wall Street endures a terrible clash of forces. The day saw hundreds of millions erased in value and stocks pushed toward the panic day lows while clerks, financiers, and stenographers work through the night to shore up weak spots.

Managers say they have conceded all they can while unions push for 12.5 percent raise and a nine hour day across 40 rail lines covering 95 000 miles with a $320 million payroll.
