Springfield Missouri despatch reports Governor Hamilton pressed by sheriff at midnight to use militia to halt a lynching in Menard county. Houlden, who killed his wife, is jailed at Petersburg.
In a lengthy Washington caucus of Democratic Ways and Means members, leaders debated reducing war taxes and harmonizing party lines. Morrison backed a plan to cut tobacco taxes and brandy duties only with tariff reductions, while many members urged nonbinding guidance and broader consensus before any bill advances.
In Augusta Maine on March 25 Democrats and independent Republicans backed Seth C. Whitehouse after a heated contest. Osman claims 4,000 fighters and refuses to communicate by anything but the sword.
The New Hampshire Republican state committee meeting in Concord set April dates for district conventions and rejected a statewide convention for national delegates. Manchester hosts the first district convention on April 22, Concord hosts the second on April 20, while discussions weighed presidential candidates with Edmunds and Lincoln favored by some and Arthur opposed.
Geo M Riley a pilot living at 204 Morgan street shot his wife five times this morning fatally wounding her and then killed himself. He had repeatedly demanded the deed to her property which she refused. A quarrel yesterday over the matter preceded the tragedy.
In the Massachusetts General Court the tariff reform resolution urged reduction of national taxes and abolition of import duties except for revenue. Speakers argued that tariffs burden labor, with critique of sugar duties and war-time tariffs, but the measure was not adopted after debate and committee report.
The seventh annual reception to J Howard Richardson drew about 175 couples to Odd Fellows hall on Tuesday. The body later identified as Alexander Davidson of Quincy, missing since November 6, was found in the Neponset River near Mattapan. Patrick W. The first through train from the City of Mexico arrived in El Paso this morning. The special conveying prominent Mexican gentlemen and a party of Notre Dame students will depart at 10 o clock via the Santa Fe line and reach Kansas City early Thursday morning. From there they travel to Chicago on the Chicago and Alton road.
A severe quake hit San Francisco at 4 44 in the afternoon, the strongest since 1563, lasting about 15 seconds. Residents fled in panic as several waterfront buildings on fill ground suffered serious damage, followed by a lighter tremor at 5 10 PM.

In Worcester Massachusetts on March 25 the Sprague Bigelow libel case defense concluded for the day and rebuttal began. Mrs Fannie Phelps Knowlton testified denying an alleged intimate relationship with Gen Sprague while her father Henry Phelps corroborated her story under cross examination by Gen Butler. The trial is expected to continue through the week.

New Haven, March 25. Ex Governor James E English argues the Democratic party must back Morrison tariff reform as the campaign issue. He predicts the bill will pass the House, fail in the Senate, and force a tariff debate between parties. English, a Connecticut Democrat, favors moderate tariffs and opposes broad protection for most industries, urging lumber and wool to be on the free list while supporting free iron. He notes New England manufacturers seek limited protection and highlights regional views on lumber and salt.
