Boston Market Review for Week Ending March 25

The market shows steady demand with small sales in various categories. Pottery and pottery-like items, coffee and dried goods, hides, fur and leather markets, and codfish trade display mixed activity, with prices and demand ranging from dull to moderate and a general sense of firm retail demand for some staples.

Boston Post Momentum in Senate Ends April 15

The Boston Post reports the Senate committee expects public business to finish by April 15. Debate on printing 5000 Herman Hapt memorials failed. A bill on publishing Commonwealth statistics and arms-purchase reports moved from the table to the orders of the day. House resolves include a $4000 grant to Washingtonian Home. A banking bill would alter charter surrender rules under new U S law. Militia bill amended to exempt Quakers Shakers firemen and others and set Adjutant General salary at $2000. Horace Greeley denounced as war critic and blamed for advocating peace on poor terms.

Rhode Island Election Favors National Unity Ticket

Rhode Island faces a pivotal election pitting Union and Democratic factions against secessionist radicals. Gov. Ten Williamson C. Cozzens is nominated to lead the national cause, pledging to preserve the Constitution and restore the Union, while critics on the Radical side attack his record and call for disunion as the state weighs its future.

Attack on Fort Pemberton Opens with Naval Assault

A vivid Civil War dispatch recounts the morning of the final assault on Fort Pemberton. Commodore's flotilla, led by the Chillicothe and DeKalb, engages the rebels with land and mortar batteries as gunboats maneuver within 600 yards. The fort’s five guns, sheltered by cotton bale walls, resist with heavy fire, while Union casualties remain low aboard the Chillicothe though both ships take damage.

Government Legal Tender Notes Endorsed by Congress

The government’s power to issue legal tender notes is affirmed as settled. Public opinion supports the provision, and those who refuse to accept them risk social rebuke. Creditors are advised to accept liquidation via legal tender, as lawsuits offer little advantage.
