Funeral for Lieut Col James O'Brien Arrives in Charlestown

The remains of Lieut Col James O'Brien of the 48th Massachusetts arrive in Charlestown after burial in New Orleans follow ing Port Hudson action. City Hall draped in mourning, body to lie in state, with services at St Francis de Sales on Bunker Hill street. Funeral at Catholic burying ground in Cambridge conducted by Rev G A Hamilton. Charlestown officials and State representatives will attend with escort by six Companies of the 5th regiment.

Union Forces Take Fort De Russey and 11 Guns

Cairo dispatch reports General A J Smith landing below Fort De Russey and marching to strike the fort before rebel General Dick Taylor. The Confederate force pursued but the Union troops won a race to the fort, capturing it along with 11 guns and about 300 prisoners. This grants Smith a firm foothold to aid Admiral Porter toward Alexandria with gunboats.
