A $100,000 bond robbery trial in Missouri ends with a hung jury. no convictions yet. A cockfight near Troy, Mass., nets $500 per main, Mechanicsville wins eight bouts. Mail carrier Sheperra in Mexico shot and robbed. killers detained. In Colorado, Maj Fountain’s command captures Rustlers Watts and Gillard after a break for liberty. The town declares it will not abandon Rocky Point despite the fire and plans a large pavilion immediately. The vacancy in the Democratic state ticket for lieutenant governor was filled by Hon. Zibao Slocum of Providence. Charles H. George has declined the nomination, citing no desire for political preferment but support for reform in national, state, and municipal affairs.
The Winchester Arms company of New Haven reports a dry artesian well at 1500 feet and has contracted for another 1000 feet of boring. The project has cost about $10,000 so far. Rev. J A Princen, a Catholic priest from Danielsonville Conn, was attacked with congestion on his way to Hartford Thursday morning. He stopped at Willimaffiic and died at the Catholic parsonage in the afternoon.
Visitors, including many ladies, paid respects at City Hall as the poet John Howard Payne lay in state. Gilmore’s Band performed outdoor renditions of Home Sweet Home and other tunes for thousands, before the coffin was moved to a four horse hearse and the funeral procession proceeded to Jersey City and on to Washington.

A telegram from Sherbrooke reports that Gerysborough village remains flooded with water and ice. Shops and barns have shifted from foundations and many homes have been abandoned. Annapolis despatch notes a freshet destroying a mill dam and part of another. A bridge at Lequille, two and a half miles away, was partly destroyed by the surge of water ice and logs.
Trartrorp Conn March 24 The boiler in H. Dexter and Son’s Windsor Locks paper factory exploded shortly after midnight. A section of the mill was destroyed. Two men were slightly injured. Loss amount not stated. Insured in Hartford Steam Boiler and Insurance Company.

Handel and Haydn Society performed Gounod's Redemption at Music Hall with soloists Henschel Humphrey Ellen Welsh Winch Remmertz and others. Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance staged at the Globe with M. W. Whitney MacDonald Barnabee Stone and Dinsmore. strong chorus and overall solid cast. Casting varied in strength but overall commendable with notable performances by Whitney and Barnabee. Also notes on legal action against Callender's minstrels and various theater listings including Behohemian Girl and Patience at Boston venues.
A sanitary committee recommended building four new schoolhouses at a total cost up to 65000 with bonds to cover the sum. One site Auburndale at about 24000 and others at West Newton Newton Centre and North Village. Steam heating proposed at high and Bigelow schools for 24000.
The English High School Association holds a grand reception and reunion Wednesday evening in the new high school building on Montgomery street. Mr. Henry P. Kidder will speak. Germania band provides music and a 100-voice chorus from the girls and English high schools performs. A promenade concert and dancing follow in the Grill hall as lighting preparations near completion.

Directors recommend another year of active duties, authority to spend up to $40,000 next year, and study of replacing callmen with permanent staff in the city proper if advantageous.
