Messages from around the world and many gifts marked the 76th birthday of Harvard President Eliot yesterday. Among the gifts only one was publicly announced a loving cup presented by the faculty.
Two distinct shocks were felt across Massachusetts and eastern New England at 1 04 a m with the Harvard Observatory recording 1 04 10. One quake lasted ten seconds, the other shorter. Tremors were reported from Boston and firms, Dorchester, Cambridge, Hyde Park and surrounding towns. Reports described rattled windows, falling crockery and frightened horses, with mentions of Augusta Me Portland Me Taunton Ma Manchester N H Springfield Mass and Chelsea.
Patrick Curran of 12 Gold Street South Boston woke to a blaze at 2 30 am and saved his wife and five children from flames guiding them through smoke to safety. He carried the infant twins wrapped in a blanket and shielded others with a canvas covering as the family escaped to the street. Neighbors Mrs Curran and the Farren family followed after Curran alerted them with his cry of Fire. Curran’s face and head were singed. a $200 loss is expected. Authorities planned an investigation into the fire likely arson.
The American liner New York, departing New York for Plymouth Cherbourg and Southampton, grounded off Cape la Hague in fog and then collided with the troopship Assaye in the English Channel, tearing a hole in the Assaye’s bow and losing the New York’s bowsprit and figurehead. Passenger James Sellers described the shock and orderly deck action aboard the troopship.

Cambridge police received a call from Councilman Monk reporting his mother was thrown from her bed by an explosion. He asked what the blast was and said he did not know its source. The incident stirred local concern but no further details were released.
Everett March 21. An officer in charge recalls sitting with feet on the table when the chandelier began to shake. He felt his hair wobble and wonders if he experienced a strange disturbance or a personal sensation.
A strong earthquake was clearly felt in Waltham at 10 seconds of shaking that woke fire and police crews, rattled every window and door, and temporarily disrupted most circuits at the telephone office.
A low rumble accompanied an earthquake felt in Quincy just after midnight. The sergeant in charge at the police station said he never felt the like and briefly questioned his own head before stepping outside to check if others felt the tremor.
An earthquake arrived on time and lasted about a minute in Lynn. Two distinct shocks rattled the police station cell doors, sparking initial fears that prisoners were escaping.
An earthquake near Danvers on March 21 stirred panic in the town and alarmed inmates at the state insane asylum. Inmates woke to tremor shock, with some shouting that the building was collapsing while others prayed fervently.
A distinct earthquake shook Waterville at 10 am, waking residents as brick buildings swayed from cellar to roof. The quake also jarred Augusta and caused chimneys to topple in the southern city area, with Portland and Rockland reporting vibrations though no major damage was noted.
J R Edmunds and H R Colson on duty at Harvard Observatory report a 1 04 am quake rocking the building for several seconds. Instruments moved, glass tinkled, seismographs agitated, and two large water tanks in darkrooms were upset. The center of vibration cannot yet be determined.
In the Post composing room operators reported that their linotype machines rocked perceptibly as they worked.
