Boston boy abandons Klondike dream returns from Alaska
Anthony La Forrest Brown of Boston gave up his chase for wealth after attempting Alaska and Canadian gold fields. He sailed from Seattle to Dyea, hauled a thousand pounds over the Chilkoot Pass, and reached Lake Bennett before learning Dawson City would be unreachable before June due to ice. He retraced to Seattle in March after stopping at Fort Wrangle and Teslin Lake. He reports over 3000 hopefuls on an island at the Stikeen River mouth waiting for ice to clear, with many wishing to be home. He says the cold, always 40 degrees below zero, is the harshest hardship.
