Old Colony Company plans city entrance and broad avenue
The Old Colony Company proposes new rail and road access to Boston with a branch from Savin Hill crossing the South Boston back bay and passing near Pearl Street. An eighty foot wide brick or stone avenue would link freight and passenger depots with bridges over the railroad, plus frequent steam powered drawbridges. The project aims to ease travel to South Boston, create pleasant promenades, and expand frequent car service at moderate fares to nearby towns.
