A fire at 1302 Commonwealth Avenue Brighton drove over 30 residents into the street yesterday afternoon. Three women, one of them an invalid, were carried through smoke filled corridors to safety.
Miss Mary Sullivan of suite 14 on the second floor discovers a blaze. She phones the janitor then the fire department as dense smoke blocks exits. Firemen rescue her and Mrs Beatrice Craig and her daughter. damages hit the second floor hallway and closet, estimated at 500 dollars. The owner is Samuel Levine.
Charles T. Bradbury was sworn in as chief of the Revere police before selectmen and hundreds of citizens. He pledged to clean up illegal business in the town and said he would resign if unable to do so, drawing cheers from the large crowd.
Beaumont police and deputies chase a lone robber who held up an express messenger on a Santa Fe train near Beaumont Texas and escaped into wooded country with 14000 in cash.

In Mexico City reports say President Huerta, pressed by finance not army concerns, seems prepared to restart talks with John Lind, Wilsons envoy. Foreign Minister Jose Lopez Portillo y Rojas was sent to Vera Cruz to reopen unofficial exchanges with Lind.

Nearly all the lamp division of the public works department will be eliminated by an order issued by Mayor Curley last night. The division, already small, will be left with only four employees or possibly fewer when the order takes effect.
The Mayor announced a salary cut for lamp division supervisor Edward C. Wade from 2400 to 1500 a year and ordered removal of an auto two horses carriages and transfer of one messenger and five inspectors to the assessing department to perform clerical work. He also plans to shift clerks from the water income division to the assessors during busy seasons to save about 10000 annually. Inspector Callahan remains with Wade. several named inspectors will transfer and a chauffeur may lose work. Earlier the Mayor directed the dismissal of Daniel Shea and 11 tenement house inspectors.
Mrs. Mary L. Rogers described to a jury in the Superior Criminal Court how she paid $87,075 for books she believed rare and valuable. The Deluxe Book trial involves Glen Farmer Sam Rosenfield and J P Clark alias James Powers on conspiracy and larceny charges. The defendants listened intently as she recounted payments mostly to Rosenfield and her limited knowledge of books.
Milwaukee March 19 fire at the Evening Wisconsin building spreads along the block and remains uncontrolled at 2 30 am. Twenty people are trapped on the Windsor Hotel top floor while the T A Chapman dry goods store and Evening Wisconsin offices face possible destruction.
Two deluxe cases were not pressed and defendants Herbert Virtue and John B Williams Jr were discharged by Judge Chase. The judge said the current case may be lengthy as jurors with one week left to serve were discharged.

Four men identified as Benjamin Freedman 25 of 153 Washington Boston Frank Abbott 28 61 Story Street South Boston Thomas Garvey 2 of 12 East Sixth Street South Boston and Arthur Ritchie 27 Norwood fled an institution. Dr Ernest V Scribner said they are from dangerous insanity likely to be violent and brutal. Police alerted quickly as their absence was discovered. State police and local forces were notified they were at large.
Mrs. Mary Kessler and her two children were saved from a Chelsea apartment fire at 32 Division Street by youths Hyman Silver and Albert M. Berman who smashed the door and carried the unconscious trio to a neighbor’s house.
