Monomoy life savers honored as search continues

The Monomoy life savers who perished Monday while attempting to rescue five men from the stranded barge Wadena are hailed for heroism. Lee Higginson & Co. urged funds to aid the five widows and 15 children, with broad community sympathy and early pledges of cooperation.

The Azalea and revenue cutters assist along with lightships from Nantucket shoals. A temporary Monomoy crew led by Captain Seth N. Ellis replaces the lost men as communities rally with offers of aid and a possible reward for recovery. The sea is calmer today but the tragedy casts a pall over the district.

Boston business leaders mobilize support for the families of seven Monomoy life-savers who perished attempting to rescue crew from the wrecked barge Wadena off Monomoy. Immigrant Arrival on Commonwealth from Naples

About 1773 Italian immigrants arrived aboard the Commonwealth from Naples with 800 expected to stay in Boston and 600 to go to New York. Landing began after 2 30 pm. around 400 permitted to land yesterday. Officers praised orderliness and care, noting 28 cents daily food cost per person and six doctors from the Italian government assessing health.

Hoboken Fire Destroys Phenix Line Pier and Ships

A rapid Hoboken waterfront fire destroyed the Phenix line pier and the British Queen, with hay and cotton burning and several lighters damaged.
