Explosion on New York steamship kills two
The steamship New York reached port after an ammonia tank explosion and a broken shaft caused fatalities and damage. Two men died from pneumonia and ammonia-induced illness. one cabin steward remains hospitalized. The incident occurred Thursday morning during a refrigerating apparatus failure on the main deck. a shaft break followed at 11:45 am with the vessel continuing to sail.

Patrick Donahoe a 90 year old native of County Cavan Ireland died yesterday in the city after a long career as editor and financier. He founded the Pilot at age 25 and built a banking business that netted him a large fortune though a 1872 fire cost him and a colleague $500000. The Pilot later passed to Archbishop Williams then returned to Donahoe who had managed it since. He was one of the best known Irish Americans with many notable friends.
