A two and a half story wooden house at 54 Park Street owned by Oscar W. Evans burned Sunday evening. Passersby alerted Chief Hopkins and the fire department who fought the blaze as it breached the roof. The Evans couple, away visiting relatives, arrived to find substantial damage caused by an overheated furnace.
The Blackstones Stone Cigars company reports a strong market presence with three brands on sale. They sold over twelve million cigars last year and have maintained sales above that figure even during dull periods, including 1895, reflecting several million more in good times.
President Clark promotes a grand union depot for New York, New Haven & Hartford, drawing praise from Lucius Tuttle and speculation by J Albert Walker on nearby Tyler Street land. Rumors swirl about Park Square site repurposing as a theatre if the depot project moves ahead.
James Queeney of Roxbury risked his life when Franklin the horseman’s pair bolted through Warren and Washington streets at 8:36 p.m. Queeney stepped into the crosswalk and seized the reins, pulling the team aside though dragged fifty yards and badly bruised. The carriage occupants remained unharmed.
The Sedgemore, sailing from Baltimore, landed the Melvin crew in Liverpool. Captain Gaskill’s Philadelphia bound schooner Melvin had been drifting since February 18 and was dismasted with boats missing when the crew were taken off March 3.
About 2000 parishioners gathered at Mechanics Hall to hear Rev P A McKenna Marlboro speak on In Page of Irish History. The program featured Henry on cornet, Johnson singing Before the Dawn and My Pretty Jane, Annabelle Clark soprano, a Santa Maria duet and A Night in Venice performed with Mesd, T Whelan on piano accompaniment by St Augustine's Cadet Band.
In Providence on March 15 a thief entered St Edward's on Branch Avenue and took $3 from a box in the hallway. He rifled a parochial school desk, failed to steal at Fourth Baptist on Scott Street, and was caught near St John's on North Main Street by the sexton before escaping with a box cover.
The Harvard Hasty Pudding and Pi Eta clubs prepare spring theatricals with Branglebrink and Alcayde. Pudding stars include A. H. Parker and H. Schurz with Whittemore leading the orchestra. Alcayde features Norman White and G. S. Newell Jr. in a Spain-set romance comedy with performances in Cambridge Boston Fall River Salem and Lynn from April 9 to 22.
Two Spanish columns fired on each other after a misheard signal on a sugar estate near Mariano Havana. Twelve soldiers died and many were wounded. both sides suffered heavy losses. The San Quintin battalion led the second column and may face court martial.
A large crowd attended the annual Working Boys Home benefit at the Hollis last night. The program featured top city talent with encores common as performers impressed. Little Alice Pierce impressed in imitations and Signorina Della Rocca from Keith's drew applause and an encore. Fred Wright kept the crowd laughing, with other notable acts including Augustus Cook Carl Sobeski David Lythgoe Gerard Russo and the Verdi Quartet.
Councilman Timothy James Butler of Ward 12 died suddenly at his home on Hudson Street at 10 AM after a 24 hour illness from acute pneumonia. Born August 10, 1869 in Boston, he was a long time Democratic worker and council member known for his temper and public service. Funeral set for Wednesday at St. James Church. Mayor notified of the death and a possible special council meeting planned.
At 10 o clock in Frankfort Kentucky the McCreary Guards were summoned to their armory causing a crowded, feverish scene. Officials denied local service but tensions rose as residents worried about possible riots or fires and rumors swirled about bringing Jackson and Walling to justice. Marcus Helman suffered a badly swollen hand in Waterbury. Doctors Wolff and Robb in Hartford applied Roentgen rays, finding a pinhead sized glass fragment in the little finger. The hand was exposed seventy five minutes and two negatives taken. Surgery to remove the glass is planned tomorrow with Dr. O'Hara assisting.
A novelist furniture dealer boasts a massive stock to underwrite 190 library tables and desks, including 50 private patterns. He cites large scale buying as the reason for low prices and high variety, presenting a Flemish Oak design with four sided closets and drawers, carved legs, and an oil finish.
