Lumber and grain markets show firm prices and mixed demand
In the past week lumber trades were practical and limited to immediate use with Southern lines leading the market. Four cargoes totaling 1,585,000 feet arrived, chiefly heavy timbers, while flooring and stepping command high prices. demand is urgent for stepping with scarce supply locally. Northern and Eastern markets rise slowly as mills push output. hardwoods remain limited though oak, cherry, and white pine show varied levels. In grains and dairy, eggs pile up in cold storage, butter and cheese hold steady, sugars advance, flour softens, oats and corn show mixed but firm pricing with strong demand for steamer yellow corn on track and higher bids from New York and Chicago.
