Adjutant A. G. Phillips reports 32d Ohio’s Sherman expedition totaled 21 000 infantry 1200 cavalry and about 40 artillery pieces with 800 wagons. Railroads were wrecked between Jackson and Meridian delaying rebuild for months as camps burnt houses were razed. Sherman’s forces reached Meridian for five days then moved to destroy rail lines around Vicksburg returning March 4 with 400 prisoners 250 to take the oath 6000 blacks 500 horses and mules and two artillery pieces.
