Congress and Mr Whiting on Centralization in Massachusetts

The Senate committee reports against legislation to suppress shinplasters and a Massachusetts statistics bureau is proposed. Rev. James Freeman Clarke is named Harvard Overseer, and Rhode Island conventions pledge allegiance to the Constitution amid attacks on centralization and habeas corpus. The piece criticizes Mr Whiting’s imperial powers view and defends local state rights and the Union.

Democratic party and abolitionism threats to Union

The New York World argues measures must adapt to changing times but says the Democratic party foresees the abolitionist threat to the Union. It claims abolitionists lack national loyalty and accuses them of seeking to shrink national boundaries, urging conservative action despite fear of public clamor.
