Ariel Sailor Ship’s Narrow Escape in Atlantic Gales

The auxiliary steam ship Ariel under Captain Smith left this port January 18 bound for Cape Haytien. Severe gales toppled her main topgallant mast and the main topgallant sail drifted and tangled with a propeller, partly warping the shaft and causing a slight leak. She sought St Thomas for repairs and by the 23d was nearly ready to sail again. Machinery remained perfect.
