Colonel William S. Clark dies at Amherst after long illness

Amherst s most prominent citizen Colonel William Smith Clark died at his home after a lingering illness. Born July 31 1825 in Ashfield he studied at Williston Seminary and Amherst College earned a Ph D in Germany taught at Amherst College 1852 1867 was professor of chemistry and zoology and served as president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College 1859 1867 he fought in the Civil War rising to colonel and later was involved in politics and agriculture in Massachusetts and abroad. He married Harrietta Richards in 1853 and had eleven children eight surviving.

Consolidation Talks Reported for Gas Firms in Boston Area

It is reported that a practical consolidation has been offered between the Bay State Company and the Consumers' Gas Company. All rights in the United States Gas and Improvement Company have also been secured. The arrangement includes cooperation from the Standard Oil Company. Negotiations are pending with the South Boston Gas Company.

Village hosts children and blind residents on outing

Yesterday the managers of a Japanese village entertained about seventy five children from the Little Wanderers Home and twenty inmates of the Asylum for the Blind. The children were merry while the sightless residents sightseeing. Last week a party from the Home for Aged Women was entertained and all who attended understood the philosophy of the treadie loom.
