In Dennisport on March 8 Miss Minnie Chapman age 15 was shot at by 42 year old Philip Cottelle who followed her to Captain Ira Baker’s house. A second shot fractured her eighth rib and punctured a left lung. she was sent home and doctors failed to locate the bullet. Cottelle then shot himself in the ear and is expected to recover. motive given as hopeless infatuation.
The Interstate Commerce Commission adopted a broad order requiring common carriers to publish joint tariffs for export related freight. Tariffs must show inland and through rates, terminal charges, and how the ocean rate is added, with bold type and public copies at depots. The measure becomes operative March 20.
In a joint council convention held tonight, Isaac F. Abbott was elected city treasurer and Isaac L. Lucas appointed as street commissioner. Blouers may have been mentioned in connection with the proceedings.
Early March 8 alarm struck three story Exchange Street block owned by Mrs. E I Pease. Basement fire spread to upper floors injuring workers and causing total losses of 20000 to 25000 for Southerland firm and 7000 for Welch and Sheehan with minor damages to others. Gra ffam Co uninsured. Separate fires reported in Williamsbridge lace factory loss over 100000. Salem stable office blaze damage about 800. Roxbury grass fire at Clarendon Hills with no damage.
Last evening Mr John McKay proprietor of the Metropolitan Hotel on Washington street invited many friends to tour the recently refurnished hostelry. The house features rich carpets bronze and color decor, private supper rooms a cafe and a new elevator. Staff include day clerk John Wilson night clerk Clayton and wine room manager Elmore. Guests were served a choice collation in the cafe. The hotel will operate on American and European plans with first class treatment assured.
