Bombardment of Canton Forces Take City Forts
Canton's bombardment began December 28 with 2000 allied troops advancing on the eastern fort while a naval brigade targeted other defenses. By October 30 the five story pagoda and north forts were taken, with Casualties including Capt. Bate and Capt. Hackett among others, as crews described a night of fire and a rapid daytime assault leading to the city’s fall.
