Fragmented Evening Vision of Youth and Smoke

An 18th or 19th century style monologue describes sipping a drink and attempting to smoke a sugar, the room filled with fragrant smoke. A mist lifts to reveal a stern visitor who questions the speaker’s youth and desires, challenging romantic notions and prompting the speaker to light another sugar and accept adult autonomy.

Bedford on March 7 1850 reports Coggswell won 51 Palfrey 49 Robinson 29 and Thompson 27 for congress. Coggswell’s remarks praise Bedford women while joking about a Washington night cap. Bedford Farmer critique follows, noting readers will judge his character.
