Onions range from 3 to 4 per barrel or crate, beets 75 cents per box, carrots 50 cents, lettuce 50 cents per dozen, radishes 35 to 40 cents per dozen, turnips 35 cents per box, cabbage and savoy around 2 dollars per box or 2 50 per barrel, squash and Hubbard 40 per ton, spinach 1 75 per barrel, cucumbers 2 dollars to 2 50 per crate, Florida tomatoes 3 per crate, green beans 1 50 per crate, peas 2 50 per crate. Prices are generally steady across regions including Havana, Key West, St Andrews, Baltimore and Florida shipments.
The market for apples shows steady wholesale prices for Baldwins No 1s at 3 50 and No 2s at 2 50 with ample supply. Mediterranean fruits are well supplied with Valencia oranges and slow Sicily lemon demand. Florida fruit shows quiet trade but steady supplies. The Columbia, nearing Gibraltar Feb 26, carries 3000 Catania orange boxes 300 Catania lemon boxes 6000 Messina orange boxes 4000 Messina lemon boxes 3300 Palermo orange boxes and 10200 Palermo lemon boxes for Boston. Brunel has 3000 boxes 800 half boxes Messina oranges and 1700 Messina lemons bound for Boston. Athens left Palermo March 5 bound for Boston with 8400 Messina orange boxes and 2000 Messina lemon boxes.
Receipts today show tallow 61 pkgs lard 1937 pkgs hams 3 bbls preserved meats 2 cases bacon 246 boxes. Last year similar totals. market steady though pork and lard higher. New York prices: tallow steady at 2 per pack, pork firm with various mess and extra prime ranges. lard firmer. Chicago and St Louis notes: mess pork quiet. no major changes.
