Free ships bill seeks US registry for foreign built vessels

The bill proposed by Hon. John M. Forbes would suspend parts of Title 48 to allow US citizens to buy ships built abroad and register them as United States ships for foreign trade for ten years. It restricts such ships from entering the US coast or domestic passenger and freight service. Forbes contrasts free trade with British guild protections and argues competition and open shipbuilding will revive US flag shipping and shipyard activity.
