New England Historic Genealogical Society Meets On Plymouth Wampanoag Links

The New England Historic Genealogical Society held its monthly meeting at its Somerset Street building. A paper by Thomas W. Bicknell discussed early Plymouth settlers relations with the Wampanoag, land purchases from Massasoit at Sowams, and the creation of New Swansea. The talk noted Massasoit’s home near Sowams, the 1621 visit by Winslow and Hopkins, and the division of Sowams lands among Plymouth proprietors. A Baptist town in Newport county was described with its admission rules and a feudal style ranking debate. Memorial notices honored Nathan Cooley Keep, George Gordon, and Thomas Bradice. Donations to the library included Civil War records of New Jersey, Boston documents, and Gettysburg maps. a small iron cannon ball from Maine was also presented, linked to a 17th century French settlement attempt.
