Supreme Court ruling on East Boston ferries tolls

The 1878 Massachusetts Supreme Court opinion by Chief Justice Gray upholds that the city may not run the East Boston ferries toll free unless tolls cover costs. It defines a ferry as a toll-bearing grant, cites historic Massachusetts statutes, and notes Aldermen powers on nominal tolls. The decision also discusses mandamus to prohibit acts before execution, citing authorities.
