Senator Elmer C. Potter of Worcester led 19 colleagues in opposing a motion to seek an attorney general opinion on laws governing sale of infected beef. The effort to obtain the opinion failed 20 to 8 in the Senate yesterday afternoon.
Former President Theodore Roosevelt passed through Philadelphia at 9 07 pm on March 4 after seven years as chief executive. His farewell words to friends were Good-by and good luck echoed to thousands as he left Washington and since.
Senator Potter argued against the O Connor measure while Dr Theobald Smith told the public health committee that disease in animal muscles renders beef unfit for consumption. The bill, from Senator O Connor of South Boston, stalled as attorneys debated its construction limiting or permitting the sale of infected beef.
The former President and Mrs. Roosevelt rode with companions including a newspaperman who urged a public good night message. He declined to speak for publication, warning any statements could be declared fakes. The couple traveled in a plain Pullman car, continuing their Washington trip.
Taft pledges to uphold Roosevelt reforms while pushing tariff revision and a new deficit-balancing tax structure. He seeks an extra session to pass a reform bill, expand monetary law elasticity, back treaty rights, postal savings, mail subsidies, and Panama Canal work. An old advertisement touts Father John's Medicine as a remedy for lung troubles and throat weakness, promising strength and flesh. It urges against substitution and promotes Taylor Whiskey at a dollar per full quart as a substitute.
Parade held in slush ankle deep as outdoor ceremony is omitted. Washington cut off wires. trains stalled. Newspapers get news by wireless due to severe weather and transport disruption.
William Howard Taft took the oath as President in the Senate chamber amid a northwest blizzard. Roosevelt, in private life, bid farewell at the Capitol and at Union Station as Taft prepared to depart for New York, while a large crowd cheered the outgoing president.
President and Mrs. Taft dominated the closing scenes of a memorable day at the inaugural ball in the Pension building. The cavernous hall hosted a canopy of ivory and white as a brilliant crowd gathered amid military splendor and fashionable gowns. Fireworks on the monument lot signaled the outdoor finale.
