Washington braces for McKinley second term with a vast parade of about 32 000 participants including 22 000 military and naval personnel. Inauguration costs exceed 4 million dollars as crowds fill streets and Capitol corridors amid festive and orderly scenes.
General Dewet suffered losses in Cape Colony but escaped with much of his commando. Commandant Hertzog may have crossed the Orange River with him. General Bruce Hamilton learned Dewet was at Philipstown but Boers were found crossing the Colesberg area, indicative of faulty intelligence. The Daily Telegraph notes ongoing pursuit with troops marching in multiple directions.
At a board of trustees session the article quoting a Yiddish critic about Dr Fleischer was deemed unfounded. The trustees affirmed the rabbi has full confidence of the congregation and there is no current consideration of his re election.
A typhoid epidemic in a tenement on Upper Second Street, Hallowell, Maine, prompts health officials to seal a contaminated well. The Board of Health and city police are investigating the outbreak as 13 cases are reported and concern rises.

About 7 percent of delegates attended. a special train arrived with the Boston contingent. The board reported its recommendation to prepare a suitable ritual for installing the power adopted.
The Anarchists plan a reception for Peter Kropotkin next Sunday evening at Paine Memorial Hall. A cone and entertainment are planned with the renowned Russian revolutionary as guest of honor as a large Boston crowd is expected to attend.
Amos Churchill died at his Hancock street home in Quincy aged 82. His daughter Henry Emery survives.
