Market Thrill and Rumors Shake Wall Street in March 1892

Boston and New York traders watched a dramatic day as New York and New England stock activity surged to reflect a possible insiders’ plan. The market opened strong with the stock up but slid, while the preferred shares fluctuated, and a conjectured “mystery” around proxies for a major railroad spurred talk of a wider scheme. Prices moved across coal, sugar, and railroad issues, with intensifying activity, large volumes, and risk amid regulatory uncertainty.
