In Lowell an estimated 60 000 people depend on 19 000 textile workers as unions press for a 10 percent wage increase. Leaders say a reply from mill owners is due by Saturday with talks to follow on Sunday. The seven unions affiliated with national and local bodies seek raises across loom fixers weavers spinners and related roles. Mills resist citing financial strain though the unions claim profits and dividends support capacity to grant the raise. If accepted the raise would total about 14 000 dollars weekly across firms including Boott Massachusetts Massachusetts Manufacturing Tremont and Suffolk Merrimack Appleton Hamilton and Lawrence.
