In Burlington a Swanton man received thirty months for forging a pension affidavit. The state tax report shows 176,683 dollars in revenue with railroads 65,560 and banks 52,771.
Massachusetts towns reflect pride while events unfold from Braintree to New Bedford. Hotels in Chicago deny drastic rate hikes during convention, with several houses confirming standard or modest pricing.
The Washington report says protectionist Democrats aim to peel off 42 votes to join Republicans and kill the Morrison tariff measure. Wyandotte Kansas March 2 Despatch to the Boston Post reports the congressional contest for the seat left by Dudley C Haskell. Republican E N Flinston of Allen county favored by grangers is likely elected by about 4000. Democrats call Riggs a backsliding candidate and refuse to declare as Democrat. The result may be claimed as a national endorsement but is not a Republican victory.
The Juliet from London reports heavy seas and dense ice off Halifax on Feb 26. A large two masted steamer alledgedly trapped between icebergs was seen in the afternoon. The Juliet later encountered a burning ship of American or colonial build about 1 PM, likely carrying oil or coal. Fire raged and the crew remained unseen while the Juliet departed.
Worcester, March 5 Mary L Phil lips, 15, vanished after being sent by her married sister to shop in Westboro. Purchases completed, but no trace since. she had lived previously in Brewster.
Two masked men entered Benjamin H. Wells's house five miles from Windsor on Friday night and shot dead his 65 year old son John E. Wells in the presence of his wife. The men demanded money, fled after getting a silver watch, and left no further clue.
A heavy snow storm began this afternoon in Halifax, delaying the train from the upper provinces that was due here at midday yesterday and pushing the Sardinian steamship to wait for trains and mails to England until its arrival.

Massillon Ohio March 2 All 35 to 60 iron workers at Russell and Co agricultural works struck over a new check system the workers say will lower wages A separate Mohawk Valley mill cut pay 12 to 15 percent triggering a strike with eighty weavers quitting and 325 being laid off In Pittsburgh twenty four Western Union telegraph operators in Galveston Texas walked out for extra pay leaving only two at work.

Jersey City March 2 Francis J. Smith Bayonne city treasurer was arrested at midnight on a charge of embezzlement. His accounts are being examined and an apparent shortage of nearly $40,000 has been discovered.
The Paint and Clay club displays its third annual exhibition in the Art club gallery on Dartmouth street, sharing space with the elder club. The 85 oil paintings, 26 water colors, 1 pastel and 21 black and white works, all by club members, are praised for representation of Boston art, with strong landscapes, cattle scenes, marines, portraits, and still lifes. The event opens to the public Tuesday by ticket, after a private press viewing and a reception hosted by the Art club.
A two year old trotting colt named Kaiser arrives in Maine at Wm. F. Pera’s stables near Augusta from Kentucky. Owned by Gen. Wm. Tilton and sired by George Wilkes, Kaiser has a distinguished pedigree with notable 2:22 and 2:16 records among relations, and is praised for his form and expected bright future.
Boston press appeal raised 3500 dollars for Gay Head and Squibnocket communities. Treasurer B W Crowinshield and C B Marchant oversaw distribution via Humane Society reps. Marchant reports vouchers show full payment of the amount to recipients on 26th and 27th inst without expenses to them.

The Park street church marked its seventy fifth anniversary with morning sermons on its early doctrinal stance and the Lord's Supper, a letter from Rev. A L Stone of San Francisco read, and an evening address by Rev Dr B K Alden on foreign missions. The church began in 1809 with 26 members and has grown while preserving core orthodoxy.
