Death at Cambridgeport Under Suspicion of Foul Play

Carl L. Thorp age 43 of Cambridge died Tuesday night at 184 Harvard Street Cambridgeport under circumstances indicating foul play. Police say a blow from a stranger in a Boston saloon earlier that evening is the suspected cause. Joseph A. Sheehan of 34 Tremont Street Cambridge was arrested yesterday afternoon as the alleged assailant and will be held pending autopsy results.

Silver Delegates Named For Kansas City Convention

Chicago platform Democrats of Maryland held a state convention to select delegates for the Kansas City national convention. The silver wing vowed to contest seats if the regular convention backs the gold standard. They endorsed the 1896 Chicago platform, denounced McKinley, and backed W. J. Bryan for president.

Donahue on Gas Company Testimony at Hearing

The committee on manufactures discussed the gas situation. John F. Donahue of Lynn, secretary of the Bay State Gas Company of Delaware, testified his duties cover Massachusetts and Delaware. The Bay State firm has 50 million dollars in capital stock. He cited 4.5 million dollars paid by Massachusetts gas firms to the Delaware company for a note. He asserted certainty about a major point, noting he is as sure as he knows anything. Parker Chandler was excused from a Friday hearing due to a court case. Donahue sought a similar break for an appointment in Delaware, but was told to resume at 10 a.m. the next meeting day.

Diamonds Thief Detained After City Street Chase

DANCE HALL SENTENCES FOR NORTH END ARRESTS

Four of five young women arrested at a North End dance hall run by Joseph Johnson were convicted for idle and disorderly conduct. Florence Williams Nelson received a year at Sherborn, Maggie Fager the same term, Alice Murphy and Mary Stone Maude were put on probation, while Mamie Brooks’s sentence was delayed for probation officer Keefe to investigate.
