Men Courted Death in South Boston With $300 in Hand
Two blind men, Joseph Sanders and Emanuel Smith, died from cold and starvation in a squalid South Boston room. Sanders died. Smith, near death, was hospitalized. Last night Boston staged Verdi’s Falstaff marking its first local production of the opera. Despite Maurel’s illness causing some score omissions the performance drew strong praise for Verdi’s score and the comic timing of Campanari and the ensemble.
