Williams College Commencement Week Festivities Continue

Testimony shows Commander Henry L. Johnson asked George W. Smalley to arrange a keeper for a night’s release from the Burlington county jail on May 8 1885. Smalley paid $5 to the sheriff. Johnson acknowledged the debt later but never paid, with promises to settle due July 1 unfulfilled.

Cumming Wins Boston Amateur Championship Row on Charles River

John I. Cumming of the Crescent Club beat John D. Ryan of the Bradfords in a three mile Charles River race for a $200 gold Howard watch. The race drew 500 spectators along Beacon Street as the Crescent eight, with Jimmy Orman as referee, posted a 21 minute 20 second victory over Ryan who finished 21 seconds later.
