Burned Pawnee Crew Is Safe in Rescue at Sea

Edmund D Daly class of 1899 won two special competition prizes totaling 150 in gold and earlier secured a 50 gold elocution prize. James A O'Donnell 1902 and David L Williams 1901 spoke, with a quartet and a cello solo by George L Grainger. Prizes were distributed by Father Quirk and Father Read Mullan, who announced the next term start September 12.

In Poughkeepsie on June 27 the Pennsylvanians edged Wisconsin by a half length to claim a dramatic four mile victory. Cornell faded to behind stage after two miles while Columbia remained out of contention from the start.

The Pawnee was a wooden steamer of 859 tons net and 1219 tons gross built in 1890 by C Hillman & Co Philadelphia and owned by William Clyde & Co New York. Captain A D Ingram commanded her on the Boston route after repairs following a destructive fire that also destroyed the Delaware and Croatan.

About forty men now command the vessel with a deck and hull in aluminum nickel alloy. The deck sheets are three sixteenths of an inch thick, saving about two tons in weight and increasing stiffness. The impact of yesterday’s accident caused only a half inch dent with no surface crack, proving the metal’s strength.

Harvard Varsity Crew Holds Brush Practice At Cambridge

In Gale s Verry Conn June 27 the Harvard crew rowed a mixed drill with freshmen. The varsity led at the start and finished the mile in about six minutes, showing improvement while the freshmen lacked their usual snap. Coach Storrow supervised from the launch with Harry Keyes observing.

Yale Crew Practice Shows Freshmen Advantage

Yale's crews completed a light session at Yale's Ferry Conn with the varsity on the water for under 45 minutes focusing on 30 stroke starts. In evening drills the freshmen and varsity faced off with Dr Gallaudet firing pistol shots and the freshmen winning each test due to greater lightness and speed.
