Washiton June 27 The national Republican committee meets to pick a permanent chairman after General J S Clarkson fails to secure the post. Fassett notes the president’s wish for another choice and urges unity while committee members name Massey Cheney Campbell and Carter as potential selections.

Colonel Henry C. Nevins of Methuen a staff member of Governor Russell died in New York after a six month illness. Born in 1848 in Boston he led the family dry goods business at 78 Chauncy Street Boston and 212 Church Street New York. He was a Methuen Company director and large stockholder in the Pemberton Company. He owned substantial Boston area real estate and was building a house on Massachusetts Avenue Washington. He belonged to Union and other clubs in New York and Boston. Funeral from his Methuen home tomorrow afternoon.
Gilbert Palmer of Jamestown about 21 took a horse and buggy from a livery stable to Fort William with Mary Concklin aged 16. They were found dead on the roadside with robes spread, a buggy cushion for a bed, and two glasses plus two papers containing strychnine. A note read Bury us as close together as possible Good-by.

Matogen June 27 A serious accident on the Saugus branch of the Boston and Maine Rail Road. Train 101 express from Boston collided with engine 178 on Linden siding. Montserrat No 202 toppled and damaged, engineer Freeman Smith and fireman John Waterman injured. About fifty passengers aboard Train 101, several cut by glass. Cause cited as negligent flag signaling. total loss estimated at $20,000.
A severe storm swept Lancaster County with nearly two inches of rain in under thirty minutes. Washington borough saw a cloud burst, streets flooded to second-story refuge levels, tobacco fields ruined, a landslide blocked the Columbia and Port Deposit railway, and Samuel Hartman’s Witmer barn and contents burned after a lightning strike.
Cincinnati dispatch reports Robert Barber, 32, killed his crippled brother John during a Cedarville quarrel. Barber was arrested at Xenia jail. Nearby at Morgan Station on the Midland road Edward McKinley lies dying from a rock blow by his brother James, an old feud over a father's estate sparked the violence.
In Boston's Board of Aldermen the long awaited veto of the $2,955,000 loan order was discussed for hours. Aldermen Keenan, Lee, and Mitchell supported passing the veto while Sullivan urged sending the matter back to the finance committee. The political activity order passed 10 to 1, aiming to bar city officers from political caucus roles.
