In Dunnar Penn June 26 a rescue party works seven feet into solid coal between the Mahoning and Hill Farm mines. The drill has reached ten feet. if no gas is found recovery could occur by morning. A second, secret tunnel from Ferguson mine neared Hill Farm but was halted by authorities at two feet away.
Pittsburg Times reports that after Quay's Harrisburg convention a ticket may run independent of the GOP. Delamater’s nomination draws no enthusiasm. Pattison is favored by many as Democratic rival. Figures show strong Republican majorities, while sentiment grows for a Pattison bid and a hard fought fall campaign.
In New London Connecticut on June 26 Cornell University defeated the University of Pennsylvania by six lengths over the three mile course with a fast time of 14 minutes 43 seconds while Penn clocked 16 minutes 28 seconds. Strong ebb tide and delays affected start but Cornell pulled away after the first half mile and held the lead to the finish amid large crowds and celebratory scenes.
Jacob Bartnick a Russian Jew stabbed and killed Michael Haley yesterday at noon after a dispute over payment for shoe repair. Bartnick 28, 6 feet 4 inches, 140 pounds, held by Patrolman Caddigan with Bartnick’s 16 year old brother implicated. Haley, about 40, lived in Newton and was unmarried. Police arrested Bartnick and later two others who attacked the officer at the scene.
The Weather Washington reports forecast to 8 p m Friday for New England and eastern New York. Expect fair weather with showers in eastern Maine and no change in temperature. Northerly winds observed.

Rome June 26 heated debate marked a council meeting over Crispi’s bill to reorganize municipal finances. All members except Menotti Garibaldi resigned in protest. Garibaldi would keep his seat amid cheers and boos while reporters and the crowd clashed, police called to restore order.
A massive license purchase petition presented in the House of Commons consisted of three rolls bearing 600 000 signatures. The rolls, encased in three eight foot cylinders, blocked view before the Speaker. After discussion the cylinders were removed and the formal presentation accepted.
An enormous gathering at the Metropole Hotel Whitehall rooms welcomed Mr and Mrs Kendal home. Genevieve Ward gave a welcome address and the Lotus Glee Singers performed. Kendal thanked Americans for their generosity and described their hospitality as overwhelming yet his heart remains with old friends and new in America.

Berwin June 26 The Reichstag rejected all amendments to the army bill and approved the first paragraph by 211 to 128 fixing the peace force at 486,983 men until April 1894. The minority included Freisinnige Volks Socialists and eighteen Centre party members. Chancellor Von Caprivi asked for a July 8 adjournment to November.
Paris reports cholera appearing in several regions but no official outbreak. heat waves grip the nation. Rome denies cholera in Italy with overall excellent health claimed. Valencia sees cholera decline while Puebla de Rugat notes minor earthquake shocks. Gibraltar extends port quarantine period.
The Philadelphia cruiser completed an official trial off Long Island with speeds over nineteen and a half knots. Despite fog and strong tides, she performed well during nearly five hours under forced draught. The board recorded 19.512 knots and pending tide corrections may raise figures. premiums were $102,400 for Philadelphia and $106,441.80 for Baltimore.
Lucien W. Sperry, seventy, former New Haven mayor and state legislator, killed himself this morning amid financial troubles. Probate efforts sought his estate after questions over $16,000 value trust, with only $4,000 to $5,000 accounted. He owed the city back taxes and faced about $50,000 in criminal indebtedness. Sperry, long his city’s prominent figure, had spent years in Europe.
New Haven reports that Thomas C. Sloane left 75000 for the Sloane Laboratory and 200000 to the college, to become available upon his wife's death. The item notes Mellin's Food as a nourishing preparation for infants and invalids, aligning with medical and public favor.

The free-for-all tomorrow was cancelled with only two entries Rosalind Wilkes and Gean Smith.
Fire report details multiple blazes on June 26. Salem’s Julyn ice house at Burnside street was destroyed by a westerly gale. several houses burned but prevented from reaching Boston and Maine shops. Charles Sey mour, in a frenzy, struck jeweller Charles Harding with a flatiron, then assaulted Seymour’s wife and severely harmed his five year old son before cutting his own abdomen. All survived tonight except the attacker and the jeweller, both in grave condition, with others critically injured. Seymour had a history of poor health and signs of insanity.
The Rev George Cushman D D associate editor of the Churchman died in Brooklyn yesterday of pneumonia. He was born in Pawtucket Rhode Island February 24 1819 and graduated Amherst College in 1840.
