A major blaze in Salem yesterday afternoon consumed half the city before midnight. Firefighters from other cities aided but could not halt spread due to low water pressure and shifting winds. Thousands homeless, widespread damage estimated between five and twenty million dollars with major plants like Naumkeag Cotton Company involved.
A partial list names major losses from the Salem fire including the Boston and Maine R R station Naumkeag Cotton Mills City Orphan Asylum St Josephs Church valued at 250000 and many factories shops and hotels across the city from the Norton Hotel to the Quinn Hotel and several leather and shoe works.
