St John s Newfoundland June 25 The British armed sloop Buzzard while attempting to reach the French treaty shore Friday collided with an iceberg stamping in her bows. By shifting guns and heavy gear to the stern and using collision mats she returned safely to port.
Four alarms from Box 61, one of the worst in three years, fought last night from 9 40 to 10 45. The Pratt and Whitney Building six stories high burned interior while the street front appeared calm. Firemen J J Hearsey was cut by falling glass and Francis McArdle fell from a ladder, as flames spread from the third floor windows on Pearl street before the blaze was brought under control.
Amid heavy rain, a spreading fire in the Pratt and Whitney building near the rear elevator caused total losses exceeding 200000. Fire crews from multiple alarms battled flames that climbed through upper floors as embers fed by book bindery materials and surrounding stocks of wool hides and dyes. Firefighters secured the area with water tower support on Pearl Street and contained the blaze after swift initial sightings by private watchman Emery Frost and officers Robinson and Casey.
Our heavy spring trade has left us with about four or five hundred Odd Beds and Bureaus. These we shall close out this week at a sacrifice. Better secure a few pieces.
Newport June 25 American's cup guardian Columbia proved world beating in three hours of sailing, outpacing Shamrock though rain halted today's race. Spectators including C Oliver Iselin Commodore Morgan and W K Vanderbilt praised Columbia's speed, left to await trials against Navahone and the defender. If not for rain a full trial would have clarified touching up needs and performance against both old and new cup rivals.
In a light eight knot breeze the trial saw Columbia quickly eclipse Defender from weather quarter, gaining 100 yards in five minutes. Herreshoff averaged 35 seconds to tack, while Captain Barr later achieved 20 seconds, showing Columbia faster by ten to fifteen seconds in Stags. Despite a canceled race, yachtsmen praise Columbia’s Bristol to port performance over twelve miles. Continued on Page 2.
Timothy W. Coakley, long in the Philippines, reports health and fascination with Manila and its surroundings. He plans a multi year stay, delaying return to Boston, while his wife prepares to join him in August and travel via Hong Kong to Manila in October. His book project, initially for Lamson Wolfe & Co, will be released by another house within months.
