Fate of New York dogs sealed as slaughter continues

In New York on June 23, despite protests by Mr Bergh and humane groups, the city moves to slaughter dogs under the amended dog law. Two or more dog catchers per Assembly District will be appointed by the Mayor, with a poundmaster paid fifty cents per dog. Capt. Marriott, the poundmaster, faced cruelty charges related to ninety dogs killed by gas, while Prof. Doremus’s gas method replaces earlier practices. Over two hundred dogs have been killed to date, and a dramatic long-wall mill collapse on Long Island adds tragedy to the day.
