The Boston Elevated Railway offers a five cent fare for riders under 14 as a special gift to New England youngsters. This half fare applies to trains and all trips for children, described as a historic concession by the Baby Hippo editor.
Yale outgamed, outguessed, and outfought Harvard to capture the historic four-mile Thames race in New London. The Crimson led early in the day through two deciding preliminaries, but the Blue surged to a clean three-length victory at the finish.
In Herrin Illinois the riot death toll stands at twenty two following an outbreak that unsettled residents and prompted a heavy police presence. The incident led to widespread fatigue and questions about local authorities handling of the unrest. Continued coverage expected on page two.
Yale defeats Harvard by three lengths in the feature. Harvard freshmen beat Yale freshmen and Harvard juniors down Yale juniors. In wrestling Calza and Zbyszko draw. Frank H Gilman, husband of Dorothy who died by her own hand and allegedly killed two infants, was arrested in Dorchester on a Monroe Mich warrant. A WWI veteran and 2d 4th Col, Gilman reportedly hid a second wife in New York. He remains jailed without bail.
Dale Roys four years old, son of Mr and Mrs John W Dale of 656 Washington Dorchester, was crushed when a cart he rode on was struck by a heavy auto driven by Paul H Crockett of Hyde Park. The driver was held on a serious charge after the accident on Brent Street near Washington. Roy was carried to Dr Linius E Roberta’s office for treatment.
A two-score gang attacked patrolmen James Hickson and Owen Heeney at a Cedar Associates dance in Berkeley Hall South End. Hickson suffered two deep head gashes and facial bruises. Heeney received bruises and a right hand injury. Both were treated at City Hospital.
Mary E Curley selects the name Happy for the Boston Zoo hippo at Franklin Park after reviewing children’s suggestions. The four year old hippo formerly known as BabyHippo is now officially called Happy Hippo, chosen June 23 1922.
The show features large American flag kites anchored in the sky and dummy clowns on ropes performing tumbling stunts. Performers shoot 300 feet into the air and execute somersaults above spectators. A highlight dubbed the Baby Hippo aerial tumble draws attention.
Today is Baby Hippo Day with a large public Welcome Home reception for the pet baby hippopotamus. The event promises fun activities and chances for children to win top positions in the celebration as performers take the stage. Continued on Page 4-Firat Col.
Four year old Helen Caliin of 150 Adams Street Dorchester remained in critical condition at City Hospital after a car struck her on Adams Street near her home yesterday afternoon. The driver fled the scene and did not stop to identify himself.
