Fear Lynchings Beset Peoria After Detective Slaying
Peoria Illinois June 3 Detective William E Murphy was killed by Billy McRae a negro desperado whom he tried to arrest on burglary charges. McRae shot Murphy in the breast and fled but was captured by Detective Chadwick. Murphy died at the hospital within twenty minutes. A mob of about 1000 men gathered at the jail as McRae was taken there.
