Ithacans Triumph in Varsity, Yale Tops Freshmen

New London Conn June 23 Cornell is crowned champion university crew with Yale freshmen shocking expectations by defeating Cornell in the freshmen race while Harvard finishes a distant third. The varsity race featured a steady Cornell lead and Yale trailed by a length at the start before the Ithacans prevailed down the stream.

Despondent Newton Woman Found Drowned at Crystal Lake

Newton authorities report the body of 54 year old Mrs Charles J Brown of Langley Road Newton Centre was found in Crystal Lake near Crescent Avenue. She had been missing since Wednesday morning and was a social figure active in local organizations. Police believe depression led to her death. Her brother is Horace Carter of Newtonville.

Massive Louisville Fire Destroys Smead & Co Foundry

At 9 30 p m the entire Louisville fire department fought a blaze in the wholesale tobacco district. Smead and Co foundry on May to Market between Eighth and Ninth streets burned, property valued at 250 000 to 300 000 dollars lost. Phenix Hotel on Market street caught sparks and faced probable destruction. guests were reportedly safe.

Yale Leaves for Santiago with Michigan Troops

The auxiliary cruiser Yale sailed from Old Point at 6 PM for Santiago carrying 160 troops from the Thirty-Third and Thirty-Fourth Michigan under General Duffield with Colonel Boynton as second in command. The men arrived from Washington today and were welcomed by a large crowd. The Harvard is scheduled to depart Old Point for Santiago early next week with another expedition.

Washington Has Not Heard Of The Fighting At Santiago

Washington officials say they have no details of fighting at Santiago though expected. General Miles says the army was ready to fight once ashore and reports speak of possible Spanish resistance.
