The 92 to 100 degree heat in Boston yesterday caused at least two deaths and over 30 heat prostrations. Schools closed in Lawrence and Somerville as businesses shut down amid intense conditions. beaches and parks drew thousands seeking relief.
Washington dispatch June 22 reports local showers in New England with cooler south portion on Thursday. Steamer departures to European ports face southwest and west winds with generally fair conditions to the Grand Banks.
Genevieve A Dodge an invalid died yesterday afternoon aboard the South station after leaving a private hospital in Boston. Her weakened condition and the extreme heat led to death. She resided at 28 Haynes court Leominster and was taken to the city morgue. An unidentified man believed driven mad by the heat jumped from the ferry Newtowne at 9 20 last night and drowned in Boston harbor.
In Burlington Vermont on June 22 a wedding party narrowly escaped disaster as a truck backed into the street delaying the couple as they rode to the depot for their trip. The landau struck a telegraph pole and plunged toward a lake. groom Jangraw and driver Harrington were injured, bride unhurt.
Boston and Philadelphia split key clashes with 9-6 and 6-1 wins as Cleveland takes two from Chicago 3-2 and 2-0. Detroit edges St Louis 1-0 to stay ahead, Yale tops Princeton 5-3, and Yale and Harvard crews practice amid heat. Chief Wilkie sets new speedway record while Miss Roteh of Boston advances in tennis semis.
A grand scene unfolds as evening arrives with a humid, hot start. The first vanguard enters as darkness settles and a cool breeze improves comfort for carpenters. The wind threatens the tent backdrop but subsides, leaving a beautiful night under a bright quarter moon.
A blaze that began in F. R. Morse's livery stable at 3 a.m. swept three stores in Sandwich, trapping 18 horses and threatening the town. Sparks carried by rising winds set fires across the block as residents rushed to control blazes threatening homes and other buildings.
Flames leap from Morse's store to Fletcher and Clark and burn the Murray corner dry goods shop. By 4 o'clock the first two shops are gone and the town crowds gathered to prevent spread to residences. Smoke, burns, and panic follow as bucket brigades form amid scarce water. A change in wind and a light shower by 4:30 morning bring the blaze under control.
Charles M. Schwab returned to New York on the Kaiser Wilhelm II and learned Charley Morse had secured bail pending appeal. Schwab remarked that Morse was more sinned against than sinning, noting he lost money through Morse but does not blame him.
Burglars tried to break into Archbishop OConnell s home by entering through a skylight after climbing to the roof. Secretary OConnell activated lights and alerted police as officers blocked streets and searched the house finding no burglars, suspected entry by boat up the Charles River.
Archishop’s home annex under construction drew a scare when noises woke Secy OConnell at 1030. Police halted street traffic and electric cars while a detail searched the area. burglars likely fled by river after escaping from the roof. A prior attempt had occurred about a year earlier.
Elsie Sigel visited Leon's room on June 9. During the night or early morning of June 10 Elsie was drugged and then choked to death in the room shared by the couple.
Chinaman Chung Sin provides a more complete confession describing Elsie Sigel murdered in New York. He states the girl lay on the bed while Leon bent over her with a bloodstained handkerchief forced into her mouth. She fought but suffocated as Leon stood over her.
In New York on June 22 Chung Sin, once a roommate of Leon Ling, described being baited by detectives and threatened with prosecution as he faced rapid-fire questions during an interrogation.
The defendant, Chung Sin, under intense interrogation, described seeing the body in Leon Ling's room above an Eighth Avenue chop suey restaurant. He said he touched the body while warm, smelled drugs, and witnessed preparations to place the body in a trunk where it was found decomposed last Friday night.
Andover June 22 class day exercises at Phillips Academy featured the formal presentation and dedication of a memorial organ. The organ was donated by Mrs. William C. G. Egleston of New York in memory of her husband, an 1854 graduate.
