The Twentieth Century Limited, Lake Shore's fastest train, ran into an open switch at St Mentor Ohio station just before 10 pm. Eleven people died and sixteen were badly hurt, with many other injuries feared fatal. The disaster halted service as investigators began work at the scene.
Thomas Lobb barricaded himself on the fourth floor of the United States Hotel after shooting nine people and holding about 1000 bystanders. He fired on police and spectators, killed himself by firing his head at the open window, as officers attempted to capture him. Lobb, a carpenter from Banson Arizona, had ammunition and placed money in the shotgun muzzle.
In Cleveland Ohio on June 21 the Twentieth Century Flyer derailed after hitting an open switch and a baggage smoking buffet car and the coach behind it were destroyed by fire. Eleven dead are certain with fears of more cremations. Panic spread as passengers fled and many were badly burned.
John Powers, owner of a small Burlington hotel on the Winooski River, was shot and seriously wounded in a dispute with five local youths who had gone fishing. Five suspects A. Randall, P. Bouger, Frank Bouger, Fred Clark and Hollis Bean are held. charges yet to be decided.

Lawrence today saw William S. Jewett released from jail after a pardon by President Roosevelt. He had served over five years of a seven year sentence for wrecking the Lake National Bank of Wolfboro New Hampshire in 1893. Jewett praised his helpers including Thomas H. Casey ex Chief Casey ex Governor Crane and Senator Henry Cabot Lodge for obtaining the pardon.
The crash left many bodies incinerated and others horribly burned. John R. Bennett a New York attorney was among the dead along with C H Wellman and T R Morgan of Wellman Seaver Morgan. Engineer Allen Tyler and Fireman Graham were killed. About 60 passengers in the Pullman cars were thrown into panic as the train ran late and derailed, with injuries from the chaotic exit.
