Widening Portland Street Pushed as Needed Public Improvement

At yesterday’s hearing on widening Portland street, petitioners argued for breadth while opponents noted some narrow lanes should not be expanded. Boston’s old streets are crowded but Portland is a key trade conduit, and widening it would financially justify the public improvement by easing traffic to transportation links.

Postponement of star route indictments debated in Washington

In Washington on June 21 the delay of star route indictments to September is seen as likely but not inevitable. The attorney general is ready to proceed with some cases, while the grand jury must handle others before adjournment for summer. Critics warn two months may strengthen prosecutions. advocates contend public interest will wane. The piece also critiques contingent fund waste across departments, especially the Justice Department, highlighting lavish horse and carriage costs, travel, and miscellaneous items. A mocking note targets reform efforts under Secretary Windom.
