Mass lynching at San José Mission spawns four bodies
Armed men masked in black and white raided the Mission of San José near San Antonio on Saturday night. They seized Lopez, Urdiales, Longoria and Huizar, then hanged four men at dawn and killed Teodoro Garcia after a stand as gunfire erupted. The attackers moved to Espada Mission and killed Garcia’s son. the Old man's other son and Teodoro fled. Huizar’s widow, mother of three, survives with an infant.

Captain Charles W. Kemn of the whaling brig Amelia reports that off Cobenda on the west coast of Cape Cod on October 5 a British steamer Lexo fired on the brig without warning. A boat with an armed officer and ten men boarded, forced deck access, and demanded crew assistance before leaving after inspecting the vessel and crew.
