At the Republican national convention in Chicago on June 19 James S. Sherman of New York won the vice presidential nomination amid a tumultuous display. The Sherman faction dominated the floor with songs and banners as Speaker Cannon arrived to lend support and greet the veteran leader.
A five-ton rock blasted from a construction site pierced the front wall of Harry T. Nay’s house at 5224 Washington Street Germantown West Roxbury. The boulder landed in the parlor, then cellar, destroying much of the room and scattering debris. A large mirror miraculously remained unharmed after flipping into the cellar atop the rock. Contractors said the blast was unavoidable with 60 sticks of dynamite used to move stone opposite the Nay residence. No one was harmed as neighbors were warned via whistle signals. The Nay family, including Mrs. Anna Nay and children, were away at the time. Estimated damage about 1000 dollars. Nay is a noted horseman, son of J. Henry Nay.
A city wide fire in Portland Maine caused 150000 dollars in damage to Monument square four story brick block at Congress and Centre. The left side housed Loring Short Harmon book sellers and stock valued at 50000 dollars with insurance. Haskell Jones tailors on the right share insured to 29500 dollars with a likely half loss. Building owned by the J B Brown estate valued at 75000 dollars.
In testimony the witness accuses Harry Thaw of courting other women, denies Thaw family involvement in the estrangement, and says Susie Merrill claimed a child was born while Harry faced trial, which she disputes. The witness contends she supported her husband’s acquittal despite personal pain.
A car of oil in the freight yards of the New York, New Haven & Hartford line caught fire and exploded. Brakeman Hugh McKay of Plymouth suffered serious facial and arm burns while trying to detach the car. Several freight cars and many passenger cars were damaged or destroyed by the blaze.
Boston Nationals defeated St Louis 8 to 6 on the South End grounds. In Chicago the Boston Americans lost the second game of the series 6 to 4. Harvard crews held a hard workout with the varsity four-oared beaten by the freshman in a close race. Ralph Glaze of the Boston Americans was sold to Providence. Case Patten, after one trial, goes to New York.
Thomas W. Lawson denounces Taft and Sherman at the Republican nominating convention, calling the process un-American and insulting to the people. He warns voters to disapprove, urging support for Debs as an alternative.
In New York on June 19 Judge Dowling weighs modifying Harry K Thaw’s Matteawan commitment. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw accuses no Thaw family member of causing their estrangement and says his behavior, including visits to Mrs Susie Merrill’s home under the name Reid, drove her away. The Merrill Levy case ends with a perjury verdict for the defendant.
In Ashton Rhode Island Mabel Rogers 16 drowned herself in the Ashton Mills Canal after fearing she would fail stenography exams at a Pawtucket Commercial School. Her body was recovered after the canal was drawn off. her mother suspects nervous dread over the final test.
Heat reach 86 degrees on June 19 with no records broken though it was the second hottest day in 25 years. Victims include Ellen Moore 52 of 180 Eliot Street and Robert Masters 63 of 65 Bearse Avenue Dorchester overcome outdoors and taken to City and Relief Hospitals.
Pittsfield reports no news on the balloon flight begun at 5 PM with owner Charles J Glidden of Boston aboard and Leo Stevens of New York piloting. Last heard near Zear in Franklin County at 6 30 PM the craft drifted northeast and was expected to land near the Massachusetts Vermont line 40 to 60 miles away.
At 6 pm a Davis Square car collided with an Arlington Centre car near 659 Main Street Charlestown. Helen Nichols eight and Mrs Elizabeth Kenny forty were shaken, refused hospital, and returned home. The Davis car fender and steps were torn. the Arlington car was undamaged. The crash due to a switch opening after the Arlington car passed.
John Foley fifty five of Montvale avenue Stoneham lies in serious condition at Melrose Hospital after being struck at Main and Sylvan streets by an outward bound car. He suffered a skull fracture a broken right leg and internal injuries. His recovery is doubtful.
At the national convention Timothy L. Woodruff names Sherman for vice president after Cannon's dramatic show of support. Lodge then nominates Governor Guild with backing from Michigan and New Jersey for former Governor Murphy as second on the ticket.
Fair and warm Saturday and Sunday with light to fresh southerly to westerly winds. Showers likely Saturday night, drier Sunday. Eastern New York expected thunder showers Saturday in the west and north, then generally fair Sunday with brisk southwest winds.
