A military cordon is established around districts where cholera has appeared. Seven more cases are reported to have developed in Puebla deUg at, signaling continued spread and mobilization to contain the outbreak.
London June 17. In the Commons Mr. W H Smith moves to convene Parliament earlier, curtail Queen's speech debates, and suspend until next session the land purchase measure. Mr. Gladstone counters a grave change in usage. Mr. Labouchere leads Opposition in adjournment motion. division 233 to 181.
Cairo reports Mahdi releases all Europeans held by his forces. London notes subscriptions to the Egyptian conversion loan are twenty times the loan amount.
Dunpar Pennsylvania June 17 rescuers fight to reach men trapped at Hill Farm mine. Air conditions worsen as brick wall seals drift to starve fire of oxygen. Pit boss Martin Markey advances toward right drift but finds no answer. Walter McCleary later reports a distant mule bray suggesting possible survivors.
Curiaco June 17. Louis Hiller, dubbed the Jay Gould of Mexico, travels home from Europe. He argues the proposed railroad linking American nations requires government financial backing from each country. Private capital will not invest without government support due to long payback periods and unprofitable regions. He expects the project will eventually be built with such backing.
The United States steel cruiser Yorktown under Commander F. E. Chadwick reached Sandy Hook after leaving Porto Grande on June 6. The ship maintained speeds of eleven to thirteen knots, carrying sick, court martial prisoners, discharged enlisted men, and commissioned officers from Chicago Atlanta and Boston transferred by Rear Admiral Walker.
Fire news from Merced California reports a house fire spreading to grain fields burning thirteen miles of stacks and fields for five hours. Loss about 20000 with small insurance. Additional blazes in Cincinnati Ohio destroy tannery on Dunlap Street with eighty thousand dollar loss and partial insurance. Other small fires include a clock factory and store damages on Washington Street Sackville Street Cook Street and 45 Cook Street with minor losses and a defective flue and firecrackers as causes.

Hobart of Braintree gave initial testimony about lobbying, compensation, and his service to the West End scheme, detailing payments and involvement with legislators.
