Dogs at New York pound under attack by Bergh and Hackett
In General Sessions Recorder Hackett urged a Grand Jury inquiry into asphyxiation of dogs at the city pound, calling the practice cruel and urging indictments if warranted. Mr Bergh warned poundmaster Marriott that dogs have a right to die without needless suffering and vowed arrest for repeat offenses. One hundred dogs were suffocated that day amid public outcry.
