Boston Fourth of July Observances Draw Crowds and Parades
Boston saw little business as schools closed and crowds gathered for parades. Charlestown City Guard led by Capt Norton marched up State street then to the Common for a dinner at City Hall, followed by the Charlestown Artillery and Brigade Band. The Charlestown Cadets and Greenleaf Guards drew attention, while the Fourth Battalion of Infantry under Major Lee drilled on the Common and marched with 74 muskets and Germania Band. Evening amusements and refreshment saloons were well patronized.

A Winchester report labeled rumors about Gen. Fremont's army. Jackson is said to have fallen back to a defensible position with 70 000 reinforcements and plans to outflank Fremont, but these claims are questioned. Prisoner escapes are noted and the 1500 to 2000 rebel prisoners en route from Fremont are not confirmed.
