In Lowell, Mayor George H. Brown sues John H. Harrington publisher of the Lowell Sun for 50000. Testimony in Superior Court before Judge Pierce covered topics from chocolate drops to bribes and liquor raids amid a campaign backdrop.
Mrs. Margaret Fitzgerald testifies she paid Mayor Brown for help concealing intoxicants and shielding her boarding house from raids. She asserts items like chocolates and thread aided his protection program, while John Green died at her lodging house in April 1907 with a $2000 policy naming her as beneficiary.
John Soarles, 22, of Bryantville, arrested for stealing cloth from Puritan mills after holding at bay a police posse with an empty revolver. He fled after a conductors confrontation on Kingston Electric Railway, led a three hour chase ending behind a grave in a Bryantville cemetery with 300 townspeople joining the pursuit.
The sun enters a partial eclipse at 6 45 tonight with about a quarter of the sun visible through smoked glass. The full eclipse is only visible in the Arctic and Central Asia while Boston will see a quarter obscured just before sunset and remain so until after sunset.
Lowell report from June 16 tells of Mr. and Mrs. Ira H. Morse and mechanic Omer Descheneaux attacked by wolves on a prairie over 200 miles from Denver. Morse and their auto was badly damaged. Morse is missing after starting off at dawn to find repair.
Judge Fessenden ordered the arrest of Dr. John R. Laxton for contempt of court as he left the witness stand. Deputy W. W. Campbell escorted him to the bar while attorney W. A. Morse questioned him over alleged conversations involving the witness' mother. Laxton struck the stand in anger, injuring his hand and continuing with the examination.
Sharp exchanges between attorney and witness Dr. Laxton culminate in Judge Fessenden ordering the courtroom cleared for press, with the defendant ordered to recognize $1000 bail for 4 PM appearance. Dr. Laxton, dazed, leaves the court with his two daughters after acknowledgment.
Six people escaped with help of police and bystanders when a fireworks explosion shattered windows and burst into flames at 61 Bunker Hill street Charlestown. The blaze occurred at the periodical shop run by Alice Welch near today’s local celebration.
At midnight a mysterious explosion and fire on Bunker Hill Street trapped residents in a periodical store. Sergeant Jeremiah J. Gallivan and Officers Anthony Fitzpatrick and John J. Fitzgerald carried Hannah Kelly and Margaret Muldane and Mary Muldane down stairs through flames. William Welch saved Alice Welch by flinging her over the counter and into the street. Frances Kelly, John Kelly, Stephen Kelly and Mary Welch escaped safely. The McCaffrey estate building suffered $2500 damage as firefighters, hindered by flames, fought the blaze on the second and third floors.
Baseball scores show Sox fall 6 to 4 while White Sox win. St. Louis Cardinals beat rivals 6 to 3. Other results include American League games and National League meetings with New York, Pittsburg, Chicago and Philadelphia posting decisive wins. McGraw and Raymond engage in a train fist fight.
